Biography / Administrative History

Iola Brubeck (1923-2014) played a major role in the success of her husband, jazz legend Dave Brubeck (1920-2012). The Brubecks had six children and they lived in various places around the San Francisco Bay Area until they moved to Connecticut in 1961. In addition to managing Dave’s bands during the early years, Iola raised the children while Dave was frequently on tour. Mary Jeanne (Anzalone Marbury) Sauerwein (1923-1999) first met Iola Brubeck in San Francisco in the late 1940s when they became close friends and frequently babysat for each other.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection consists of dozens of letters and postcards from Iola Brubeck to Sauerwein between 1947 and 2000. The correspondence give researchers a better understanding of Iola Brubeck and her role as a mother while Dave Brubeck's career rose through the 1950s and later. Researchers will find the letters reveal some of the seminal ideas that lead to Dave Brubeck's success, like Iola's idea to play concerts at college campuses. The letters also contain discussions of the family and professional lives of the Brubecks.
