Abstract: Dr. Manuel Gaxiola (1927-2014) was an author and preliminary leader of the Iglesia Apostolica de la Fe en Cristo Jesús in Mexico. He served as president and presiding bishop of Mexico’s Iglesia Apostolica de la Fe en Cristo Jesús for two terms (1970-1974, and 1978-1982). Dr. Gaxiola also served as the first non-US president of the Society for Pentecostal Studies, and director of CERLAM (The Center for the Study of Religion in Latin America). The Manuel J. Gaxiola Collection includes biographical material, correspondence, administrative records, and ministerial training and publications. Materials relate to the charismatic church movement in Latin America, particularily the Iglesia Apostolica de la Fe en Cristo Jesús.

Biography/Administrative History

Dr. Manuel Gaxiola (1927-2014) was an author and preliminary leader of the Iglesia Apostolica de la Fe en Cristo Jesús in Mexico. He served as president and presiding bishop of Mexico’s Iglesia Apostolica de la Fe en Cristo Jesús for two terms (1970-1974, and 1978-1982). Dr. Gaxiola also served as the first non-US president of the Society for Pentecostal Studies, and director of CERLAM (The Center for the Study of Religion in Latin America). Born in Guamuchil, Sinaloa, Mexico, Dr. Gaxiola was among the first Latin American Pentecostals to earn a doctoral degree (University of Birmingham). Gaxiola graduated from the Apostolic Theological Institute in Mexico City. He earned further degrees at the Pentecostal Bible Institute in Tupelo, MS; the University of the Americas; and Fuller Theological Seminary. He served in a variety of roles in the Iglesia Apostolica including secretary of national and foreign missions, district bishop, secretary general, secretary of Christian education, and president of the national youth convention.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Manuel J. Gaxiola Collection includes biographical material, correspondence, administrative records, and ministerial training and publications. Materials relate to the charismatic church movement in Latin America, particularily the Iglesia Apostolica de la Fe en Cristo Jesús. Other organizations include the Bible Society of Mexico, CEMAD (Mexican Ecumenical Committee for the Homeless), CERLAM (Center of Religious Studies of Latin-America) formerly CEPROMEX (Center for the Study of Protestantism in Mexico), MEX-OIKOS, Evangelical Council of Mexico, IAMS conference, World Council of Churches, CEPROMEX, Spiritus Magazine, and the Society for Pentecostal Studies. Dates range from 1930-2005. Content is written in the English and Spanish languages.
