    Biographical/Historical note

Millard Sheets was born in Pomona, Calif. in 1907 and studied art and painting at the Chouinard Art Institute, graduating in 1929. He was primarily an architectural designer, and partnered with architects to design buildings. Sheets was a well known watercolorist and taught art at the Otis Art Institute, Scripps College, and Chouinard Art Institute. During World War Two, Sheets was an artist correspondent in India and Burma for Time Magazine. In 1953 he founded Millard Sheets Design Inc., which brought together his architectural designs and licensed architects and engineers to design buildings, both commercial and residential throughout California. These buildings were designed with art- both sculptural pieces and murals- as integral parts of the architecture. Sheets died in 1989 in Gualala, Calif., at age 81.
