This collection contains the papers of California businessman and two-term U.S. Representative Horace Davis. The papers include Davis’s correspondence, manuscripts, publications, and genealogical research. They also encompass the documents of the Davis family in America from the 17th to 20th centuries and include land deeds and other contracts, family registers, wills and estates, correspondence, and other personal and official documents. Smaller sections of the collection pertain to the Bancroft family and the California minister Thomas Starr King.

Horace Davis was a businessman and United States Representative from California. Davis was born on March 16, 1831 in Worcester, Massachusetts. He attended the Worcester public schools and Williams College, graduated from Harvard University in 1849, and studied law in the Dane Law School of Harvard University. He was the son of Massachusetts Governor John Davis and the younger brother of diplomat John Chandler Bancroft Davis.
