Acquired from various sources.
Scope and Content of Collection
Pictures, chiefly relating to the history of the American West and California, acquired from various sources by The Bancroft
Library. Includes photographic prints, photographic copy prints, prints, illustrations clipped from published sources, postcards,
and other pictorial material. Some of the material present was from the early "picture drawers" of Bancroft Library, and had
been assigned item numbers from 1 into the thousands. Although no longer stored in drawers, new acquisitions, including entire
collections, were added to this numeric series until about 1970. At that time the numbers ranged from 1 to 17,500. With the
establishment of an accession number system beginning with a year of acquisition, old "picture drawer" numbers had the year
"1905" added as a prefix, to create a numeric pattern that would sort correctly with the new accession year system. (1905
was the year the University acquired The Bancroft Library. The material in the picture drawer number series, however, was
acquired through much of the 20th century.) Subsequently, collections within this large range of "1905" call numbers were
cataloged and can be searched in the library online catalog. Single items and small groups of illustrations with no recorded
provenance were not cataloged, and these materials are considered part of this "Bancroft Library pictorial miscellany" (sometimes
known as the "1905 miscellany"), with access provided through this preliminary list, linked below.
