Biographical / Historical

Winthrop Raymond moved from Ohio to Montana with his family in 1865. He opened a grocery store with his brother in Virginia City, Montana, which eventually expanded into a horse and cattle breeding business. In 1889 Raymond moved to the Ruby Valley, where he purchased land and founded the town of Sheridan. He had three children: Delilah Raymond, Mary Raymond Johnson, and Carrie Raymond Junod.

Primarily financial documents including receipts and correspondence dealing with loans, real estate, and mortgages; as well as individual and partnership tax returns. There are also several miscellaneous receipts for livestock sales, stock certificates, and city services. Land and water documents include mining claims, a grazing permit, and correspondence related to irrigation and drainage, including an agreement with the Northern Pacific Railway Company.
