Biographical / Historical
Winthrop Raymond moved from Ohio to Montana with his family in 1865. He opened a grocery store with his brother in Virginia
City, Montana, which eventually expanded into a horse and cattle breeding business. In 1889 Raymond moved to the Ruby Valley,
where he purchased land and founded the town of Sheridan. He had three children: Delilah Raymond, Mary Raymond Johnson, and
Carrie Raymond Junod.
Scope and Contents
Materials related to the Raymond Cattle Company and the Raymond family of Sheridan, Montana. Primarily financial documents
including receipts and correspondence dealing with loans, real estate, and mortgages; as well as individual and partnership
tax returns. There are also several miscellaneous receipts for livestock sales, stock certificates, and city services. Land
and water documents include mining claims, a grazing permit, and correspondence related to irrigation and drainage, including
an agreement with the Northern Pacific Railway Company. A small amount of family materials include Carrie Raymond Junod's
typewritten will and a few unidentified photographs. There are four maps of the Sheridan area, including a 1938 hand drawn
map of the town, and two drawings of the Raymond property.
