Abstract: Thomas O'Loughlin served in the US Navy during World War I as a member of the crew on the hospital ship USS Mercy. He left for France in May 1918 and with his shipmates provided medical and other support for Allied forces fighting in Europe and the US over the next several months. While serving on the USS Mercy Thomas wrote letters to his mother and other family members at home in Connecticut. Thomas writes most frequently about his desire to be discharged from the Navy. The collection also includes correspondence his mother received from military personnel informing her Thomas could not be discharged, ephemera, and more.
