Description
The Cedric Gibbons and Hazel Brooks papers span the years 1918-1972 (bulk 1940-1960) and encompass
approximately 15.3 linear feet. The collection consists of Cedric Gibbons's office files from the MGM Art
Department, as well as clippings, personal files, correspondence, financial files, periodicals,
scrapbooks, and photographs. For Hazel Brooks there are numerous clippings and some other material,
including shared financial records. There is little material related to Dolores Del Rio. The photograph
series consists of biography and motion picture production photographs.
Background
Cedric Gibbons was an American art director who oversaw Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's art department from 1924
to 1956. Credited as the designer of the Oscar statuette, he was nominated thirty-nine times and received
eleven statuettes. Gibbons was married to actress Dolores Del Rio from 1930 to 1941 and actress Hazel
Brooks from 1944 until his death in 1960.
