Background
Dance at UCLA began as part of the physical education department on campus. Dance classes were offered as part of the physical education major and for general college students. In 1957, a separate dance major was established; and in 1962, a graduate program was established that offered a Master's degree in Dance. Also in 1962, the Department of Dance was established in the College of Fine Arts. Alma H. Hawkins was the founding Chair. Hawkins began teaching at UCLA in 1953; and during her tenure, she developed the first dance department at a U.S. university that served as a model for other dance programs and departments around America and in Europe. She retired from UCLA in 1977.
