Abstract: The professional papers of the founders of the Black Think Tank, Drs. Nathan and Julia Hare. The collection documents their
work at the consulting firm, Nathan Hare's tenure at San Francisco State - particularly the establishment of a Black Studies
Department at the college - and his work at The Black Scholar, and Julia Hare's career as an author and motivational speaker.
The papers include correspondence, writings, personalia, research files, audiovisual materials, and digital files.
Condition Description: Completely unarranged, needs folder level processing.
Physical Location: Many of the Bancroft Library collections are stored offsite and advance notice may be required for use. For current information
on the location of these materials, please consult the library's online catalog.

Conditions Governing Access
Cartons 1-16 and Flat Box 1 are open for research. Box 1 includes restricted student and personnel information and is closed
to researchers until 2038.

Biography
Nathan Hare was born in 1933 in Oklahoma. He graduated from Langston University in Oklahoma, and earned a doctorate in Sociology
from the University of Chicago. Hare began his academic career as a sociology professor at Howard University in 1961. According
to his biography, his increased involvement with the Black Power movement and his leadership in campus protests led to his
dismissal from Howard in 1967. In 1968, Hare was hired at San Francisco State, where he was involved in the strike to establish
the Black Studies Department. Hare was fired from State in 1969. That same year, he co-founded the journal The Black Scholar,
with Robert Chrisman and Allan Ross. Hare resigned from The Black Scholar in 1975. He
earned a second Ph.D., in clinical psychology. and set up a private psychotherapy practice in San Francisco. Hare was also

Educational psychologist, relationship expert, author, and motivational speaker Dr. Julia Reed Hare (1939-2019) was born in
Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hare earned her B.A. in music from Langston University, her M.A. degree in music education from Roosevelt
University in Chicago, and her Ph.D. in education from the California Coast University. She also served as public information
director of the Western Regional Office of the National Association Against Discrimination in Housing and worked in radio
and television in San Francisco.
The Hares married in 1956. They founded the Black Think Tank, a consulting firm that focuses on issues affecting Black families,
in San Francisco, in 1979. The Hares published a number of books, as well as the periodical Black Male/Female Relationships.

Processing Information
The Nathan and Julia Hare digital files were received on 368 3.5" floppy disks, and 2 optical disks [370 disks EXTENT = 182.2
MB (2,868 files)]. The files were scanned for viruses using Malware Bites. Forensic disk images of the source media were made
by Library staff using AccessData FTK Imager. Archivists extracted and analyzed the files in FTK and TreeSize Professional,
screening material for personal identifiable information (PII). Library staff used TreeSize Professional to deduplicate files.
115 floppy disks were found to be empty or could not be imaged due to file corruption.
Processing Information
The Nathan and Julia Hare digital files were received on XX 3.5" floppy disks, and 2 optical disks [369 disks? EXTENT = 199
MB (3,656 files)]. The files were scanned for viruses using Malware Bites. Forensic disk images of the source media were made
by Library staff using AccessData FTK Imager. Archivists extracted and analyzed the files in FTK and TreeSize Professional,
screening material for personal identifiable information (PII). Library staff used TreeSize Professional to deduplicate files
reducing the collection from XX to 199 MB. XX floppy disks could not be imaged due to file corruption. WERE ANY DISKS EMPTY?

Nathan Hare co-founded the interdisciplinary journal The Black Scholar: Journal of Black Studies and Research with poet and
scholar Dr. Robert Chrisman and printer Allan Ross in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969. It was published by the Black World
Foundation. Hare resigned in 1975 "in an ideological dispute over the direction of the journal." The series includes administrative

Hare taught in the Sociology Department at Howard from 1961 until his dismissal in June 1967. The series includes newspaper

a conference announcing the formation of the Black Power Committee. There are articles by and about Hare (including "Black
Insurrectionists in the Act of Dying," "The Negro's Escape from Freedom," and "Black Power Professor with a Punch"); Hare's
notes [for The Darker Shade]; an interview with G. Franklin Edwards (Head of Sociology Dept. at Howard); writings by Kenneth
