Abstract: The collection is comprised of 42 volumes and 8 microfilm reels of material documenting various aspects of North Bay history,
with a focus on beliefs, customs & folkways; place names & folk speech; historical characters, outlaws, miners, and lumbermen;
legends, tales & anecdotes; pioneer stories and personal reminiscences; and children's lore and folklore in the schools. The
majority of the materials were gathered or created by Dr. Lee’s students, and other interested parties, in the American and
California folklore classes at Sonoma State University.

Collection is open for research by appointment.
The library can only claim physical ownership of the collection. Users are responsible for satisfying any claimants of literary

Biography/Administrative History
Hector Lee was a professor of English, Dean of Instruction, and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Sonoma State College
/ Sonoma State University. He was also a significant writer & storyteller, a scholar of national reputation, an editor, and
a radio, TV, and recording personality. He taught at University of Utah, Chico State College, and Dominican College as well
as Sonoma State.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection is comprised of 42 volumes of student research papers and reports, and includes photographs, newspaper articles,
oral histories, and memorabilia.
