    Biography

Edward Biffer Roessler was born in Redlands, California, on August 28, 1902. He graduated from Hollywood High School, attended the University of California, Los Angeles for his first two years, and transferred to UC Berkeley, where he earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics, specializing in geometry.
In 1933, he was assigned to develop the Division of Mathematics and Physics at the Northern Branch of the College of Agriculture (now UC Davis). He chaired the division and later the Department of Mathematics.
His lifelong interest in wine led him to co-author, with Maynard A. Amerine, UC Davis enology professor emeritus, Wines: Their Sensory Evaluation. He also authored several textbooks, including Problems in Agricultural Mathematics; Principles of Sensory Evaluation of Food, co-authored with Amerine and Rose Maire Pangborn; and Introduction to Probability and Statistics, co-authored with Henry L. Adler.
Roessler later served as Dean of University Extension, a post he held until retiring in 1970.
He passed away on July 13, 1993.
