Abstract: The Charles Heussy Walker collection, 1897-1906 (SAFR 23817, HDC 1661) collection consists of 3 letters of introduction for
Charles Heussy Walker, who was dispatched to provide relief for Pacific Steam Whaling Company whalers whose vessels were ice
bound in Point Barrow, Alaska. There is also a news clipping about a later stranding of whalers on Herschel Island. The collection
has been processed to the file level and is open for use without restrictions.

Historical or Biographical Note
The Pacific Steam Whaling Company was formed in San Francisco in 1883. It had a fleet of whaling vessels that routinely went
to Alaska and the Arctic Ocean to harvest whales. Vessels included ORCA , JESSE H. FREEMAN, BELVEDERE, NEWPORT, FEARLESS,
JEANIE and ROSARIO. An account of the stranding of the company's vessels in 1897 can be found in the book: Whales, Ice, and
Men: The History of Whaling in the Western Arctic by John R. Bockstoce pp. 315-323.
Edward Avery McIlhenny was a naturalist from University Museum in Philadelphia who had leased a former rescue station at Point
Barrow in 1897 (then newly acquired by Pacific Steam Whaling Company from the Federal Government) and planned to winter there
to collect specimens for an ethnological collection.
