Abstract: The Palos Verdes Peninsula Coordinating Council collection documents the activities of the Palos Verdes Coordinating Committee,
later renamed the Palos Verdes Peninsula Coordinating Council. The organization is made up of representatives from area organizations,
agencies and interested citizens. The materials include administrative records and scrapbooks created by the Council. The
collection provides a view of the activities of the Council membership as well as a wide-range of community issues.
Scope and Contents
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Coordinating Council records consist of administrative records, agendas, meeting minutes, newsletters
and calendars and scrapbooks created by the Palos Verdes Coordinating Committee, later renamed the Palos Verdes Peninsula
Coordinating Council. The majority of the records are minutes of both board and general meetings, published calendars and
clippings from area newspapers regarding the Council's activities.
Early minutes include detailed descriptions of general meetings in which guest speakers or organization leaders spoke on various
topics. Topics are varied and include a community-wide survey on the recreational needs of youth, the construction of a proposed
community building for the Peninsula, efforts of the Save Our Coastline organization to halt construction on the Peninsula,
the acquisition of land for and the building of the Library branch locations, homelessness, youth employment, Peninsula beatification,
and preservation of trails.
The collection also includes service award nominations and recipient lists, various publications and correspondence. Of particular
note is a 1963 Council publication called Laws for Youth, a 21-page publication outlining all ordinances on the Palos Verdes
Peninsula affecting minors and juveniles, and a file on the Palos Verdes Peninsula Youth Commission, an independent arm of
the Palos Verdes Peninsula Board of Education, which includes brochures and clippings related to the Commission's "Bike for
PAY (Peninsula Action for Youth) and Thumb Taxi programs.

Biographical / Historical
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Coordinating Council began in January 1954 as the Palos Verdes Coordinating Committee. It was
created to assist and coordinate the activities of community organizations and agencies working in the community, encourage
civic responsibility, involvement and awareness in the community and also to facilitate in the creation of new services or
programs as needed.
The first meeting was attended by representatives from eight organizations including the Kiwanis, Parent Teacher Association,
Girl Scouts, Senior Dance Club, the Women's Club, Neighborhood Church Guild, Arts Association and the P.V. Players.
In October of 1958, the Palos Verdes Coordinating Committee joined the Federation of Community Coordinating Councils of Los
Angeles and changed its name to the Palos Verdes Peninsula Coordinating Council. At that time, the Council largely focused
on youth related issues such as delinquency prevention and enrichment activities, but it also looked into other community
concerns including safety, zoning, community beautification, education and recreation.
To facilitate the coordination of its member organizations and inform the public of community events, the Council started
publishing a calendar of events in the 1970s. Prior to this publication, the Council posted event notices and community calendars
in the local newspaper.
Council membership is made up of representatives from public and private agencies, service club and civic group leaders, religious
leaders, law enforcement organizations, school board members and interested citizens living or working in the community.
