Description
The Shannon L. Peters Correspondence includes two hundred letters between Manteca, California, resident Shannon L. Peters, his wife, Velma L. Peters, and their eight children in 1968 and 1969, while Peters served in the Vietname War. The letters afford insights into emotional strains that American military families experienced at that time.
Background
A native of Iowa, Shannon L. Peters (1922-2010), served in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War. After it ended in 1945, he moved to Manteca, California, where he resided for the next sixty-five years, thirty-five of which he worked at the nearby Tracy Defense Depot. In 1968 and 1969, at the height of the Vietnam War, Peters served in the U.S. Army Supply Depot at Qui Nhon, Vietnam.
