Abstract: This archive contains materials documenting the contributions of individuals, families and organizations within the Cuban community of California. The materials in this artificial collection reflect Cuban American life and culture in California chiefly from the 1950s to early 2000s.
Language of Material: Spanish; Castilian, English.

Scope and Contents

This archive contains materials documenting the contributions of individuals, families and organizations within the Cuban community of California. The materials in this artificial collection were chiefly collected by USC curator Barbara Robinson and reflect Cuban American life and culture in California chiefly from the 1950s to early 2000s. The archive is arranged into the general collection, small special collections, serials, and a set of telephone directories.
The general collection contains subject files related to Cuban American individuals, organizations, and events in California. Individuals represent a variety of professions and positions such as writers, artists, musicians, journalists, activists, and teachers. The content of these files vary, in some cases only containing biographical information in the form of one photocopied article, while in other cases there is promotional information for events, such as flyers and postcards, letters, or documents.
Small special collections in the archive include: a Bay of Pigs clippings collection; a collection on the Havanafama theater group in Los Angeles; a collection of scholarly articles donated by political scientist Dr. Max Azicri (USC Alumnus); scrapbooks of Esther Herrera, one of the community's leaders and activists; a collection of writer Ileana Gonzalez Monserrat; documents from the work Adolfo V. Nodal, general manager of the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department; documents from the Lorente family; and a Cuban coat of arms plaque donated by Angela M. Garcia-Montes.
There are also "La Guía telefónica Cubana" telephone directories (2002-2015) and Cuban serials published in California including a complete run of the weekly newspaper "La Voz Libre" (1981-1997).
