In 1975, Manning lodged a complaint with the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners and the Los Angeles City Attorney, requesting a formal investigation into the Los Angeles Police Department's discriminatory practices against gays and lesbians.

    Biography

    Michael T. Manning was a gay activist in Los Angeles. Manning served as a chairperson for the Christopher Street West Association gay pride parade in 1972 and was a member of the Gay Community Alliance. In 1975, Manning lodged a complaint with the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners and the Los Angeles City Attorney. He requested a formal investigation into the Los Angeles Police Department's discriminatory practices against gays and lesbians.

    Scope and Contents

    This collection comprises correspondence, legal documents, clippings, event flyers, and photographs, 1972-1981, from gay activist Michael T. Manning. The collection includes Manning's 1975 complaint to the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners and the Los Angeles City Attorney requesting a formal investigation into the Los Angeles Police Department's discriminatory practices against gays and lesbians. The collection also includes correspondence to local politicians and to editors of news publications advocating for gay rights; a typescript on unity in the gay and lesbian community; legal documents pertaining to the management of his apartment complex and a breach of contract dispute with a credit union; and photographs of unidentified nude men, circa 1980.
