Biographical Note
Best known for his biographies of E.E. Cummings and Paul Bowles, Christopher Sawyer-Lauçanno (1951- ) began his career as
a staff writer for Time-Life Educational Sytems in Tokyo, Japan from 1980-1982. While producing English language instruction
text, Sawyer-Lauçanno transitioned to literary biography, beginning with his biography of Paul Bowles,
An Invisible Spectator: A Biography of Paul Bowles (1990). Other works by Sawyer-Lauçanno have included more biographies, including
E.E Cummings: A Biography (2004), translations of works in Spanish and French, poems, librettos, and articles in numerous periodicals.
Sawyer-Lauçanno received a New York Times notable book citation in 1989 and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in
1992.

Papers of American biographer, translator, critic, and poet Christopher Sawyer-Lauçanno (1951- ). The bulk of the material
dates to the 1990s.
In addition to the annotated manuscript drafts and galley proofs of Sawyer-Lauçanno's literary biographies, translations,
and other works, the collection contains publication agreements and editorial correspondence, research and interview notes,
and personal correspondence with other writers and poets, including John Ashbery and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
Among the manuscripts are those to Sawyer-Lauçanno's biography of E.E.Cummings,
E.E. Cummings: a Biography (2004), and Paul Bowles,
An Invisible Spectator: a Biography of Paul Bowles (1989), and to his work on American expatriate writers in Paris,
The Continual Pilgrimage: American Writers in Paris, 1944-1960 (1992).
