This collection consists of correspondences, drawings, articles, photographs, and the business dealings of the Los Angeles
Theatre, the Tower Theatre, and the Cameo Theatre. These theatres were all once owned by H. L. Gumbiner. These items detail
the receipts and costs of running the theatres as well as the refurbishment of them. There are also architectural plans, drawings,
and cost estimates. Photographs and drawings show the theatres entrances. The newspaper articles talk about the theatres opening.
H. L. Gumbiner was an independent exhibitor from Chicago who moved to Los Angeles in the early 1920′s. He acquired two theatres
on Broadway, the Cameo, and the Garrick. The second of which he tore down to build the Tower Theatre in 1927. The Tower Theatre
was the first built in Southern California for the talkies and the first to be air-conditioned. Gumbiner opened the Los Angeles
Theatre in 1931. Gumbiner eventually went bankrupt due to not being able to compete with big theatres owned by the movie studios.
