Plan of tenements on South Fork Bullskin HM 5508 approximately 1772

Biographical / Historical

In 1750, George Washington purchased over 450 acres of land along the North Form of the Bullskin Run, now located near Summit Point, Jefferson County, West Virginia. He then added over 1,500 acres to the plantation. In 1769, he began leasing 200-acre tracts of land to tenant farmers. The Bullskin plantation remained in Washington's possession until his death in 1799.

Document endorsed by George Washington as "Instructions from Congress 22d June 1775" (no signature) and had been folded, so is most likely the recipient's copy. Text is primarily in the hand of Secretary Charles Thomson, with some in hand of President John Hancock; document signed by both Hancock (twice) and Thomson. (2 pages)

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The manuscript was among the Washington items offered by the Philadelphia auction house Thomas Birch's Sons in December 1890 (Catalog No. 657, Lot 21). The sale was part of the final settlement of the estate of the widow of Lorenzo Lewis (1803-1847), Washington's grandnephew. According to a typewritten note attached to the manuscript and signed by H.D.L. Lewis, the executor of the estate, the lot was purchased by "Messrs. Mitchell of 830 Broadway, N.Y."
