Included in this series are general professional files, teaching files (for his work as instructor in Criminology at the University of California), and operational files for the Berkeley crime lab. Subseries 3.5. consists of work diaries, which are a combination of appointment books and extensive work-related notes. Series 4.  Case files 1916-1952

Physical Description: 41.25 linear feet (carton 48-81; oversize box 1-11; box 33)

Scope and Contents

This series, which consists of four sub-series, is made up entirely of Heinrich’s criminological case files. Sub-series 4.1. encompasses the largest group of Heinrich’s case files, which document his work on handwriting/typewriting analysis cases. Among other topics, these files deal with fraud, forgery, and estate disputes. Sub-series 4.2. consists of case files for Heinrich’s consulting work on violent crimes. Subseries 4.3. consists of files for handwriting analysis cases dealing with anonymous letters (including threatening letters and extortion letters). Sub-series 4.4. consists of case files for special topics or non-violent, high profile cases, including automobile accidents/crimes, the Hindi-Gadhr case, the Harry Bridges case, and the St. Francis Dam failure.
Case files vary in content and completeness but might include notes, correspondence, photographs and photographic enlargements, trial exhibits, and other evidence. Heinrich used photography extensively in his case work and this is reflected in the content of the case files. Some graphic crime scene photos are included but Heinrich most commonly used photographs in his handwriting analysis work.
Physical evidence found in case files was removed and destroyed if it was determined contain possibly dangerous chemicals, biological material, or substances that could not be properly stored. The labeled wrappers used by Heinrich to contain evidence were, however, retained in the folder. Some physical evidence was retained, especially if it was well-contextualized and did not pose excessive difficulty for storage and handling. See Series 8 for selected evidentiary artifacts removed from case files.

Processing Information

Heinrich's case files came to The Bancroft Library in a couple of alphabetical files. The processing archivist decided, during the course of processing, to create break these larger files into subseries for ease of access. Heinrich's general handwriting analysis cases still make up the largest subseries of case files. Heinrich's case files rleating to violent crimes are a separate subseries as are his files for anonymous letters and his files for a few selected special topics cases.
In this electronic finding aid, name access is provided only to the violent crimes case files.

Series 8.  Selected artifacts/evidence 1915-1950

Physical Description: 4 linear feet (oversize box 18-25, cardfile boxes 17-18)

Conditions Governing Access

Materials in Series 8 are restricted and require curator permission to view. Materials are housed in boxes with clear lids for ease of viewing and are not to be opened without curator permission.

Scope and Contents

This series consists of artifacts found in Heinrich's collection that were most likely used for testing in his criminal laboratory. Some of these artifacts were stored, by Heinrich, with his case files. Others were stored separately from the case files but had an identifiable relation to one of Heinrich's cases. The decision was made to house these materials separately from the case files to allow for proper viewing and handling. Decisions about what artifacts to retain the collection were made by the archivist. Artifacts that could be contextualized and connected with the stories and criminal cases documented in the collection were retained. Some evidentiary artifacts, including some loose strands of hair, tiny bits of fiber, and small clumps of dirt or other matter, were difficult to store and serve and, therefore, were not retained in the collection. Any wrappers containing these materials and labeled as such were emptied of their contents but retained in the case files.
