Willard O. "George" Jorstad (1899-1991), carpenter aboard KAULIANI (built 1899; bark, 3m) during her final voyage in 1941, gave the photograph to Steven A. Harris. From 1988-1992, Mr. Harris worked as a part-time historian for Mr. Jorstad, compiling and transcribing writings and interviews regarding Mr. Jorstad's experiences in gold mining and his KAIULANI voyage. SFMNHP received the photograph from Mr. Harris in 2004. A copy of the photograph is attached to a profile about Jorstad on Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestrylibrary.com/family-tree/person/tree/100738037/person/250005863720/).

    Historical or Biographical Note

The three-masted bark KAUILANI was built by Arthur Sewall in Bath, Maine, in 1899. In 1910, the Alaska Packers Association purchased KAIULANI and renamed her STAR OF FINLAND.
She served in the Alaska salmon cannery trade until 1927 when she was laid up in Oakland, California. In 1941, Hammond Lumber Company purchased the vessel and renamed her KAIULANI. She left Aberdeen, Washington, and sailed around Cape Horn to Durban, South Africa where she continued on to Australia. The United States Army acquired her and converted her to a barge. After World War II, she served as a lumber barge in Manila. Attempts in the 1960s to return KAIULANI to the United States for restoration were unsuccessful. KAIULANI was the last American-built square rigger and the last American square rigger in regular commercial service.
