Abstract: The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research records contain subject and academic program files representing
the administration and organization for graduate studies affairs and research activities.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research records contain subject and academic program files representing
the administration and organization for graduate studies affairs and research activities. The files also include formational
and research orientated publications produced by the various Organized Research Units (ORUs) within the academic infrastructure.
The majority of the files reflect the administration of Richard Attiyeh (1982-2006), including working files documenting curriculum
and degree planning, committee meeting minutes, and proposals for undergraduate and graduate level education degree options.
Administrative History
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research (OGSR) administered various responsibilities for graduate
student planning including evaluation of programs, oversight of graduate admission and examinations, review of grant proposals,
and allocation of research assistantships. The office also monitored faculty allocations within the graduate disciplines
and student enrollments. The two areas of responsibility were integral components, as the office designed programs to produce
graduates developing specialized areas of research post-graduation. The office also facilitated UCSD's extensive research
enterprise and promoted and supported the research mission and complex infrastructure required of the various research units.
The responsibilities included research administration, Organized Research Units (ORUs), Multicampus Research Units (MRUs),
Contract and Grant Administration, Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property, and Animal Care and Animal Welfare, while
playing a leadership role in federal and state research relations.
Keith A. Brueckner was appointed as the first Dean of Graduate Studies by the UC Regents at their January 1965 meeting, effective
February 1, 1965. Brueckner later resigned his appointment, effective July 1, 1965. Frederick T. Wall, the Vice Chancellor
- Research at UC Santa Barbara, was appointed Vice Chancellor - Graduate Studies and Research at San Diego, effective July
1, 1966. Herbert York succeeded Wall as Acting Dean in mid-September 1969, and was appointed Dean in December 1969. York
continued as Dean of Graduate Studies and Research until his appointment as Acting Chancellor, effective September 1, 1970,
and Roy Harvey Pearce became Acting Dean. Chancellor William McElroy appointed Roy Harvey Pearce as Dean, effective July
1, 1973, and he continued until Manuel Rotenberg was appointed Acting Dean in July 1975 and, later Dean, in May 1976. Rotenberg
continued as Dean of Graduate Studies and Research until the appointment of Richard Attiyeh by Chancellor Richard C. Atkinson,
effective July 1, 1982. Dr. Attiyeh retired in 2006.
Beginning in 1966, Chancellor John S. Galbraith appointed the first Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research on the
UCSD campus, Frederick T. Wall (1966-1969). Under Chancellor William McGill, Clifford Grobstein obtained the new title Vice
Chancellor of Educational Programs and Research and was also the Dean of the School of Medicine in 1969. It was during the
time of Chancellor Herbert York, the position existed as the Dean of Graduate Studies. York held both titles in 1971. During
Chancellor William McElroy's tenure, he appointed Roy Harvey Pearce (1973-1975), as Dean of Graduate Studies until Manuel
Rotenberg (1975-1981) succeeded Pearce. Chancellor Richard Atkinson re-organized the administrative units in 1980 and appointed
Richard Attiyeh in 1982. Attiyeh stayed in the position until 2006, in addition to his appointment as Senior Vice Chancellor
of Academic Affairs (1996-1998). In 1998, the title changed to Vice Chancellor for Research Affairs and Dean of Graduate
Studies, which Attiyeh facilitated both units. This reorganization was facilitated by Chancellor Richard Dynes. Under the
direction of Chancellor Marye Anne Fox (2005-2012), the office became two separate units: the Vice Chancellor for Research
Affairs and the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) under the Dean of Graduate Studies. The Vice Chancellor reports directly
to the Senior Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs and works closely with the Vice Chancellors-Health Sciences and Marine Sciences.
