    Administrative History

The San Francisco Horsemen's Association (SFHA) was formed in 1940 as a nonprofit organization to foster an interest in horses and horsemanship and to share its member's passion for horses and trails with the San Francisco Bay Area community. SFHA is a versatile club providing a busy event calendar of organized rides, educational programs and community events. Monthly dinner meetings provide a social forum to exchange ideas, discuss equestrian issues, and plan activities. The club's monthly newsletter, Tales, communicates to members about upcoming events and important information concerning the horse community. SFHA is a member of the California State Horsemen's Association, Region VI. Children, families, non-members, dogs and ponies are welcome at all events.
SFHA's experiences have included the maintenance and building of old and new bridle paths throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area; the establishment of better care and respect for the horse; the bringing together of all classes of horse people for better understanding within their ranks; the sponsoring of functions such as organized Rides, Barbecues, Rodeos, Horse Shows, Dances, etc., all to create goodwill and to bring the horseman and his activities closer to the general public.
The SFHA was formed by Mrs. Billie Winckelman, along with a group of prominent San Francisco horsemen. The first general meeting was held April 1940 at City Hall, where By-Laws were presented for approval, and the SFHA was formally organized and started. John Ratto (1940) was elected the first President, followed by Homer Thyle (1942), Ray Stone (1943), and William Strauss (1944). In 1943 the first Rodeo was held at Shellville. As of 2019 SFHA is still an active association.
