Abstract: This collection contains the documents of the Schramm family, a family of Bessarabian Germans who were moved to German territory
during World War II. The documents include pre-war military papers; resettlement documents; naturalization and employment
papers; and some letters, including personal correspondence.
Biographical / Historical
The Bessarabia Germans lived in the Russian land of Bessarabia between 1814 and 1940. Because of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact
in 1939, ethnic Germans, including the Bessarabia Germans, were relocated to Germany and German-occupied territories in order
to fulfill the Nazi idea of Lebensraum.
Scope and Contents
This collection contains the documents of the Schramm family, a family of Bessarabian Germans who were moved to German territory
during World War II. The earlier documents include photographs and Romanian military papers. Many of the documents pertain
to the family's resettlement in Germany and include the family's naturalization form and employment papers. There is a letter
from the German military informing the Schramm family that one of their members was killed in action. Much of the collection
consists of postwar documents. These documents include correspondence and insurance identifications. Some of the more personal
documents include a card expressing condolences and an engagement announcement.
