Background

Scope and content:

The Department of Music Concert Programs and Flyers collection (1966-2016) primarily contains programs and flyers promoting concerts and events from the Department of Music at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Program and flyer subject matter includes auditions, Senior Recitals, CSUDH Jubilee Choir concerts, Spring Dance concerts, and more.

This is an ongoing collection and more concert programs and flyers from more recent concert seasons will be added periodically.

Biographical / historical:

Music as a major was added to the college catalogue in fall 1966 [1]. Since then, several professors have played a critical role in expanding the music department's presence. Marshall Bialosky led the Dominguez Chorale and gave free concerts in what was the Little Theatre and later the Playbox Theatre in the early 1970s along with Frances Steiner who led the Dominguez Chamber Orchestra [2]. Dr. Steiner also took over the Carson Symphony in 1976 and would often bring the two orchestras together to perform especially when celebrating the City of Carson's birthday each February [3].

Hansonia Caldwell formed the CSUDH Jubilee Choir in fall 1977. The group performed 10 to 12 times annually, established a scholarship fund, and held a creative arts camp for high schoolers each summer [4]. Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Steiner would bring the Jubilee Choir and the Carson-Dominguez Hills Symphony Orchestra together to perform on occasion as well [5]. Dr. Caldwell would eventually go on to become the Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts in 1980.
