Abstract: Photocopies of administrative records, 1978-1985, of Senior Action in a Gay Environment (SAGE), including documents from SAGE
co-founder Douglas C. Kimmel. SAGE was founded in 1978 with the purpose of promoting the general welfare of older people in
the gay and lesbian community in New York City.
Senior Action in a Gay Environment (SAGE) was founded in 1978 in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City, with
the purpose of promoting the general welfare of older people in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.
SAGE's founders sought to create a network of support and services that included a visiting program for older LGBT adults,
a drop-in center, support groups for people living with HIV/AIDS, and a municipally-funded caregiver respite program for LGBT
elders. As of 2014, SAGE has 27 affiliates throughout the United States and engages in advocacy work on behalf of older people
in the LGBT community.
