Biographical/Historical note

Joseph Leupp Johnson was born on May 23, 1911 in Pasadena, California. Son of the architect Reginald D. Johnson, Joseph Johnson attended Harvard University for undergraduate and graduate study in the field of architecture. Out of graduate school in 1939, Johnson got a job as a draftsman for the architect William W. Wurster from 1939 to 1942. From 1946 to 1949 Johnson collaborated with architects Gregory Ain and Alfred W. Day until he was made a partner in 1949. The three architects worked together as Ain, Johnson & Day until the firm dissolved in 1951. Johnson went on to open his own firm which he operated until he joined forces with Samuel E. Lunden in 1960, to form Samuel E. Lunden, FAIA, Joseph L. Johnson, AIA, Architects, Planners. Joseph L. Johnson died on June 20, 1987.
