Scope and content:

The material is Rev G.H Smukal’s logbook of the meeting minutes of the Evangelical Lutheran School Association of Los Angeles that took place at St. John’s Lutheran church. Dates range from 16 April 1913 to 14 December 1914. A dozen handwritten notes (c.1916) were inserted between blank pages of the 8x12 bound journal.

Biographical / historical:

Rev. Gotthold H. Smukal organized St. John’s Lutheran Church in 1906 at E. 2nd and Dacotah Los Angeles, CA. Meetings of the Evangelical Lutheran School Association of Los Angeles were hosted at the church at least between 16 April 1913 to 14 December 1914. Rev. Smukal served as President in the Southern California District of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, from 1930-1942. St. John’s Lutheran School, Los Angeles, CA was established in 1913. Teachers were Jesse R. Stenske and Miss Irene Matthews.
