Abstract: The papers of Intel founder Andrew Grove include files related to speaking engagements, writing by and about Grove, photographs,
and other material.
Biographical / Historical
Andrew S. Grove was a businessman and author who is best known for his role in the founding and growth of Intel Corporation,
which at one time was the world’s largest manufacturer of semiconductors.
Born in 1936 in Hungary as Andras Grof, Grove survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary from 1944-1945 before fleeing the country
during the Soviet invasion of 1956. Arriving in the United States at the age of 20, Grove initially worked as a busboy before
earning a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the City College of New York.
After moving to California, Grove received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley before
joining the staff of Fairchild Semiconductor in 1963. Five years later, Grove left the company to join Fairchild colleagues
Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore at Intel, a newly-founded company producing memory chips and microprocessors. Initially a director
of engineering, Grove eventually became the president of Intel in 1979 before later becoming CEO in 1987 and additionally
Chairman of the Board in 1997. During Grove’s tenure, Intel microprocessors became the industry standard in personal computing,
in the process making Intel one of the world’s largest companies and most valuable brands. Andrew Grove and his management
philosophy, which he outlined in books, articles, and editorials, received considerable credit for Intel’s success, and in
1997 Time magazine named Grove their “Man of the Year”. After stepping down as Intel’s CEO in 1998, Grove remained on the
board of Intel until 2005.
In addition to his work at Intel, Andrew Grove authored books on management strategy and corporate leadership, a memoir of
his emigration from Hungary, and numerous articles and editorials on topics such as business, technology, economics, and healthcare.
He was also a frequent speaker and presenter. Grove donated $26 million to the City College in 2005, after which the CCNY
School of Engineering was renamed the Grove School of Engineering. He received the Heinz Award in Technology in 1995, the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Medal of Honor in 2000, and was inducted into the California Hall of Fame
in 2009.
Grove died on March 21st, 2016.
Scope and Contents
The Andrew Grove papers consist primarily of slides, notes, and background information for speaking engagements undertaken
by Grove between the 1980s and 2010s, as well as articles, editorials, and book material written by or about Grove from the
1960s through 2010s. Additionally, the collection contains invitations and correspondence between Grove and various public
figures and events he associated with, including correspondence with notable figures such as Bill Clinton, George W. Bush,
Rupert Murdoch, Warren Buffett, Tom Brokaw, Dianne Feinstein, and Arthur Rock.
Much of Grove’s writing, which consists primarily of articles and editorials, has been interspersed with articles, interviews,
and publicity written by others about Grove. For this reason, written work authored by Andrew Grove has been combined with
written work of which Grove is the subject. Additional written work includes drafts, notes, reviews, and publicity for books
authored by Grove, as well as materials related to different translations of his works.
The Grove papers also contain assorted Intel-related documents, including annual reports and board notes and minutes. Finally,
the collection contains over 650 optical discs, spanning a range of subjects and content. This computer media is closed until
processed.
