Historical note

The Jules Stein Eye Institute was established in 1966 as part of the Center for the Health Sciences and the School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Planning for the Institute began in 1961 when the UCLA Faculty of Ophthalmology approached Jules Stein and the Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. foundation for assistance in the development of vision science center. The building was not formally completed until March 2, 1967. However, the scientific activities of the Institute began immediately after the building's dedication on November 3, 1966. The construction, maintenance, and equipping of the Institute was largely funded through private philanthropy. This effort was led by Jules Stein who prompted support from other donors.
The Institute's focus is on the preservation of vision and the prevention of blindness and balances research, education, and patient care as it's three service areas. The Institute, in conjunction with the Department of Ophthalmology, offers academic training, workshops, and other programming. Research activities cover a range of vision science areas as well ophthalmology. Additionally, the Institute provides community outreach services such as the Mobile Eye Clinic, the Eye Donor Program, Shared Vision (an eyeglass recycling program), MagniVision (a lending library of low-vision aids), and other community education programs.
