Custodial History

According to the previous owner of the albums, they belonged originally to Mary Helen Ward of Carmel, California, who is most likely the young woman who appears throughout.

Scope and Content

Two albums of black-and-white photographs, the first containing 518 photographs and the second 540 photographs, both relating to a family in Southern California. Highlights include camping trips; an air show with dirigibles and biplanes (possibly the Los Angeles International Air Meet in 1910); servicemen in uniform; Santa Barbara Mission before the 1925 earthquake, Mission San Juan Capistrano, San Gabriel, and San Fernando; a view of the Hollywood Hills and "Hollywoodland" sign.
Other images feature shots of the home and gardens, family and friends, family pets, trips to the beach, boats, automobiles, trains, costumes made for a Shakespeare performance, and school children. Locations include Pasadena, Riverside, Catalina Island, Balboa, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Oakland, Mount Tamalpais (California); Washington D.C.; Seattle, Yakima (Washington); The Dalles, Salem, Medford (Oregon).
