Series 2. Family Correspondence and Personalia 1928-1994

Physical Description: Carton 4, folders 46-72; Carton 5, folders 1-25

Scope and Content Note

Includes correspondence between Richard – “Dick” – and Gitta, as well as letters between the couple, their parents, and their children, Alan, Andrea, and Karen. One folder of Gitta Meier's correspondence to Dick is water damaged. There are also some household financial documents. Brigitta "Gitta" Unger Meier had an M.A. and a certificate in social work from University of California, Berkeley, and there is a small amount of correspondence related to her professional work. Other subjects include the couple's activism regarding civil rights, co-operative and fair housing, child welfare, population control and family planning, and their childrens' education. Some of Dick’s colleagues wrote more personal letters to both of them, or professional letters to Gitta, and the series includes her active correspondence with her sister, Grete Unger Heinz. There are some drawings, year-end letters sent to family and friends, and a few letters from the girls to Santa. Other active correspondents include Mrs. E.T. Chanlett, Dorothy and Doug, Frances, Nora, Sylvia, and Kathleen D. Tolman. The personalia includes some school records and biographical material related to Dick and one of Gitta’s journals.
