    Abstract: John V. Richardson (b.1949) is a professor of Library and Information Science at UCLA (1979- ). In 2013, he was awarded emeritus status in recognition of his long and accomplished career. This collection, spanning 1949 – 2013, focuses on Richardson’s research and writings on the history of librarianship, information policy, international librarianship, information retrieval systems, and government documents. Also included are Richardson’s course notes and syllabi from UCLA, correspondences with various leaders in library education, and documentation of events and conferences attended.
    Language of Materials: Materials are primarily in English, some materials in Russian.

    Biography/History

    John V. Richardson is a professor at UCLA’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1949, Richardson received his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1978. He began teaching at UCLA in August 1978. His scholarly research focuses on international librarianship, library science education, and government documents. Richardson held the position of editor for The Library Quarterly between the years 1995 and 2003. Between 2002 and 2007 he served as Associate Dean in UCLA’s Graduate Division. In 2013, he was awarded emeritus status in recognition of his long and accomplished career. Richardson has traveled around the world to advocate for the advancement of library and information science education. He currently resides in Inglewood with his wife Nancy.

    Scope and Content

    This collection consists of materials related to the teaching career and professional scholarship of professor of library and information science, John Richardson. The papers include research notes, drafts and final copies of manuscripts, correspondence, facsimiles, photographs, microfilm and digital media. Note that Series 3 contains a small amount of documents about his early life and academic pursuits.

    This collection has been arranged in three series, two of which have been further arranged into subseries. The contents of each series and subseries are arranged alphabetically by subject, except for Series 3 which has maintained its original order.
