    Biographical Note

    John M. Raper was a private in the 92nd Ohio infantry during the Civil War. He was born in 1827 and married Maria [surname unknown]. He was enlisted in 1862 and discharged in 1865 because of rheumatism. They had seven children. They lived in Benwood, West Virginia. John died in 1901. It appears from the letter that they had some kind of shop and property. Raper fought in the battle of Chattanooga (November 23-25, 1863).

    One letter from John M. Raper (1827-1901) to his wife Maria detailing the fighting around Chattanooga, Tennessee, during the American Civil War. Discusses the rental of their house and upkeep of their shop and land as well as making note of what should happen in event of his death, "And if anything should happen that I should get killed in battle I will release you from the promise of keeping house by yourself." Chattanooga, Tennessee, September 24th, 1863.
