Background
Cine Acción began in 1980 in San Francisco as a community based organization. Its main focus was to provide a venue for independent
films by and about Latinos in the United States. Festival Cine Latino was one of the first Latino film festivals in the United
States at a time when there were very few such events. Over the years the organization grew to include features from Latin
America and Spain, always with a focus on independent voices. In addition to the film festival, Cine Acción also produced
a monthly bulletin and a quarterly newsletter addressing Chicano and Latino cultural identity, politics, and film criticism.
It ceased to exist as an active organization in 2005.
