Historical or Biographical Note
Michael J. Ryan was a naval architect, marine engineer and surveyor in private practice at 525 Market Street, San Francisco,
Calif. He was born in San Francisco on January 30, 1897, and graduated from Sacred Heart College of San Francisco in 1914.
Until 1916 he was a draftsman with the Union Iron Works before joining the Moore Shipbuilding Company where he had become
assistant naval architect by 1921. Mr. Ryan first joined the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers as a junior
member in 1918 and became a full member in 1934. During the period 1921-1929 he was a consulting naval architect with offices
in New York City. From 1929-1933 he was associated with the American Bureau of Shipping as a technical surveyor before retuning
to private practice as consulting naval architect in 1933. He formed the firm of Joslyn and Ryan, naval architects and marine
engineers of San Francisco in 1940. In 1949 this partnership was dissolved and Mr. Ryan became president of his own firm,
Michael J. Ryan Associates, Inc., and remained in this capacity until his death on October 31, 1964.
