Description
Writings about Codfishing (SAFR 17108, HDC 233) consists of five items that are listed here. A copy of an article titled "Fresh Water in Bering Sea" by Captain Ed Shields, undated, from an unidentified publication. "Codfishery to Oceanographic Center, 1877-1967, Parts I & II" by Louise Teather, Landmarks Society Historian, Historical Supplement, Summer 1967 and Fall 1967, Belvedere-Tiburon Landmarks Society. A copy of an article from The Seattle Times, Sunday, December 14, 1969, Glen Carter's Carrousel, "My Milkman Went Fishing" concerns codfishing on board the SOPHIE CHRISTENSON under Captain Shields. The last item was compiled by Glenn Burch and is titled "The Alaska Codfishery." The typed narrative has been transcribed by Burch from a recording he received from Captain Ed Shields. Shields also provided original negatives from which black-and-white photographic prints were prepared and Burch taped them to colored paper with handwritten captions. The narrative concerns the development of the dory for codfishing. The collection is available for research use without restriction.
