History
The Department of Agronomy and Range Science began in 1904 as the Division of Experimental Agronomy in the College of
Agriculture of the University of California, Berkeley. In 1906, the division was largely moved to the University Farm at
Davis, which was better suited to researching agricultural practices of the Central Valley. The two-year non-degree program
included practical work in agronomy and experiment station research focused on developing improved cereal and range crop
varieties.
In the early years, faculty members focused on specific crops or specialties. Plant breeding was a major part of the
department's research, with an active program in cereals, forage and food legumes, and oil crops. Following World War II,
the
division was renamed the Department of Agronomy. In 1968, Range Science was added to the department name to reflect the
inclusion of a program devoted to management of range lands.
In 2004, the department was consolidated with three other departments (Environmental Horticulture, Pomology, and
Vegetables Crops) to form the Department of Plant Sciences.
