Background
The Johnson family of East Weare, New Hampshire included Col Edmund Johnson (1794-1814), his wife Phebe Austin Whittier (1798-1871)
and their children: Anna (1822-1861), Maranda (1823-1869), Caroline (1826-1926), Abby (1828-1921) a school teacher, and Mary
(1830-1904) also schoolteacher. Phebe A. was a cousin of the famous poet, John Greenleaf Whittier. Her brother was Moses Austin
Cartland who was also an abolitionist and frequent contributor to The National Era, an abolitionist newspaper.
