    Biographical / Historical

Edwards "Ned" Huntington Metcalf was a Pepperdine University Board member, a T.E. Lawrence enthusiast and collector, and grandson of Henry Edwards Huntington (a railroad tycoon and founder of the Huntington Library, Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens located on his San Marino estate). He was an owner of multiple small businesses as well as president of the Huntington Land Company. He frequently donated to the Huntington Library, and had his own collection of rare books, primarily related to T.E. Lawrence and coins. Metcalf was born November 4, 1911, to parents John and Elizabeth Huntington Metcalf. The family lived in Northern California, and Edwards was the second of four children (Mary, Edwards, John, and Lawrence). He married Jane King (1910-1994) and they lived in San Marino, California for many years. Metcalf also served in the Navy during the Korean War. He died in Sierra Madre, California in April 2001, and he and Jane were buried in Riverside National Cemetery, in Riverside, California.

    Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, ephemera, and photographs of Edwards Huntington Metcalf. The bulk of the correspondence is from Metcalf's mother, Elizabeth Metcalf; his wife, Jane Metcalf; and Bushby Harold & Associates, regarding property Metcalf owned in Tasmania. In addition to the correspondence, there are also various documents, diaries, etc., that are integrated throughout the correspondence in alphabetical order. The photographs in this collection are loosely organized by subject: aerial shots of the Palestine front, Metcalf, miscellaneous, portraits, and Tasmania. Ephemera includes brochures, fliers, pamphlets, business cards, ribbons, newspaper clippings, invitation cards, and Jane King's memorial service program. There is also miscellaneous ephemera relating to the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery and Frank King, a cartoonist.
