Abstract: Nazarene missionary Floyd Jerry Perkins (1924 - Nov 14, 2008) was born in Bertha, Minnesota to a family of Christian and Missionary Alliance members. The Floyd Perkins Collection documents the life and ministry of Nazarene missionary Floyd Perkins and his family in Mozambique, Brazil and Colorado Springs. The collection includes personal records, correspondence, certificates and photographs as well as copies of Floyd Perkins’s theses and dissertations. Also included are the research notes and other information collected on the development of Christian missions in Swaziland for his dissertation.

Biography/Administrative History

Nazarene missionary Floyd Jerry Perkins (1924 - Nov 14, 2008) was born in Bertha, Minnesota to a family of Christian and Missionary Alliance members. From 1952 to 1956, he and his wife Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Owen (married Sept 1947) established the Church of the Nazarene among the Portuguese. In 1956, he became President of Nazarene Bible College of South Africa, while also pastoring Johannesburg Central Church (1956-1959) and Horizon Church of the Nazarene (1965-1967). In 1967 the family returned to Mozambique where Perkins was Principal of Colegio Bíblico, Secretary of All African Executive Council & Mozambique Executive Council and pastor of Lourenzo Marques Central Church. In 1972 the family moved to Campinas, Brazil where he became Rector of Seminario Bíblico, Campinas. In 1977 Perkins retired and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where he was Professor & Chair of Theology at Nazarene Bible College, then Professor Emeritus from 2000.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Floyd Perkins Collection documents the life and ministry of Nazarene missionary Floyd Perkins and his family in Mozambique, Brazil and Colorado Springs. The collection includes personal records, correspondence, certificates and photographs as well as copies of Floyd Perkins’s theses and dissertations. Also included are the research notes and other information collected on the development of Christian missions in Swaziland for his dissertation entitled, “A History of Christian Missions in Swaziland to 1910.” These research notes and the accompanying dissertation are an internationally significant documentary collection containing both published and unpublished materials. The collection also includes published and unpublished material documenting the ministry of Phyllis Perkins.
