    Biography/Administrative History

Dr. Richard C. Dwyer started his time at the California Nautical School as the 1st Chief Engineer in 1931. He moved into the position of Superintendent three years later and was in that position until June of 1937. Unlike today, during his tenure the position of Superintendent was synonymous with that of the Ship's Master. He was eventually asked to step down as Superintendent due to the fact the the Training Vessel at the the time was Navy property. Regulations required that only Navy officers could be in charge of Navy owned vessels. With that said, he remained a part of the Cal Maritime family for another eight years serving as the Dean of Instruction.
