    Organization of the Collection

    This collection is organized in 4 portfolios, referred to as "volumes".

    Biographical / Historical

    William Henry Jackson was the official photographer of the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories between 1870 and 1876, under the leadership of Dr. Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden.

    Scope and Content

    Chiefly large format landscapes, with some portraits of Native Americans and survey party members, taken in the American West as part of the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, known as the Hayden Survey. Locations include many views in the vicinities of Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, as well as Utah, New Mexico, Montana Territory, and Idaho.
