Historical Note

Underwood & Underwood was founded in 1881 in Kansas by brothers Elmer and Bert Elias Underwood, and was a large publisher of stereoscopic photographs. At the height of their success the company was producing 10 million stereoviews a year, including boxed sets with specific themes, including education, religion, and travel.
In 1910, the company began to shift focus to the field of news photography, and in 1920 stereoview production was discontinued and Underwood & Underwood sold its stereographic stock and rights to the Keystone View Company.
