Scope and Contents
This collection consists of reports and articles by Philippines based journalist Albert Ravenholt. The materials include typed
or mimeographed articles, newspaper clippings, correspondence, reports, publications, press releases and other materials.
The majority of the collection is comprised of typed or mimeographed articles from 1948-1968 when Ravenholt was a Chicago
Daily News foreign correspondent. The articles' were primarily written from Manila, Taipei or Hong Kong. These articles were
sent via wireless transmission were written using cablese, the 20th century journalist language. The subjects of the articles
cover the establishment of Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist government in Taiwan, threats of invasion there or in the Philippines
by Mao Zedong's forces, societal and economic change in China, Japan's reconstruction, growing turmoil in both Vietnam and
Laos, and increasing United States dependency on the Philippines as political leverage. There are also reports, publications
and other primary source documents that Ravenholt used as research material for his articles.
The collection includes two bound volumes of
Reports on the Philippines written for the American Universities Field Staff, 1953-1959. The American Universities Field Staff was a collaboration between foreign correspondents and universities. For these reports
Ravenholt was associated with Harvard University. These bound volumes were Ravenholt's personal copies and many include a
'Not for Publication' note at the end.
Biographical / Historical
Albert Ravenholt was born on September 9, 1919 in Wisconsin. After graduation from high school he served on a logging ship
bound for Shanghai. After the start of war between Japan and the U.S. he volunteered as a convoy leader for the Red Cross
transporting medical supplies from Lashio into China via the Burma Road. He got his first job as a journalist for the United
Press, working from 1942-1945 covering China-India-Burma Theater. From 1945-1946 Ravenholt was the United Press Bureau Chief
for China and India.
In 1946 he married Marjorie Severyns in Shanghai. Severyns was an Office of Strategic Services intelligence officer serving
in India and China.
In 1947 Albert Ravenholt was a Fellow at the Institute of Current World Affairs at Harvard University and then worked in the
United Press Peking (Beijing) bureau until the Chinese Communist Party takeover. From 1948-1986 Ravenholt was the Chicago
Daily News foreign correspondent for Southeast Asia. He was based in Manila. He also was a founding member of the American
Universities Field Service, a group of writers stationed around the world. As part of his work with the AUFS he authored several
books and gave lectures. After 1978 he continued to split his time between Manila and Seattle involved with various agricultural
interests in both locations. He passed away at his home in Seattle on April 25, 2010.
