Administrative/Biographical History

David Hosack (born 31 August 1769, died 22 December 1835), a physician, was professor of botany and materia medica at Columbia University. He established Elgin Botanical Garden and was founder and president of the New York Historical Society. John P. Scheck (1797?-1872) received his medical degree at Columbia in 1819 (see Holloway, Medical obituaries, 401b).

Scope and Contents

Manuscript lecture notes recorded by medical student John P. Schenck for courses given by David Hosack at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. Most lectures are numbered and dated, from late 1816 through early 1817. Written in cursive script in brown ink. The volume appears to be a bound-with of five smaller volumes. Volume 2, title page presents a list of 19 authors and brief titles: "In the course of the winter the following works were recommended for perusal." Volume 2 closes with tables of remedies, grouped by class or category, with headings: com[mon] name, med[ical] name, dose, and administration.. Volume [3] includes medical recipes or formulae and a table of "Dutchess C[ount]y Medical Society Standard of med[ical] charges," a list of fees for various services. Volume [4] is titled "Notes on anatomy & surgery ... by Dr. Post, lecturer." The title page to the first volume includes another person's name inscribed at top, and "Plenck's Pill" and "Dr. Post's office" following the other text.
