    Immediate Source of Acquisition

Kern County Land Company promotional photograph album was purchased by The Bancroft Library from Walkabout Books in 2017.

    Organizational History

The Kern County Land Company was founded by James Haggin and Lloyd Tevis in 1890.

    Note

Item list entries transcribed from hand-written captions on album leaves and/or captions printed, from negatives, within photographs.

    Note

Most views by unidentified photographers. Includes at least 5 views (:20, :41, and at least three of the montage images within :38) identified as the work of photographer Carleton E. Watkins, who in 1888 was commissioned by the founders of the company to document Kern County. Several other images are very likely to be the work of Watkins, a set of which is found, numbering 418 photographs, at the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division (Lot 3379).

    Note

Uniform tone of prints suggests they were printed specifically for this project, around 1900, probably from earlier negatives or in some cases, copy negatives.
