arts framer Jeffrey Kriger and includes photographs, slides, negatives, contact sheets, and other related materials.

Collection is open for research. Funding for processing this collection was provided by a grant from the National Historical
Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). The erotica in this collection may only be viewed by researchers age eighteen
and over and it is made available for educational and research purposes.

Biography/Administrative History
Jeffrey S. Kriger (1946-1989) was a San Francisco-based photographer, entrepreneur, and fine arts framer whose photographic
works focus primarily on landscapes and personalities within the Bay Area, New Orleans, and other geographic locations.
Kriger was born in Youngstown, Ohio and grew up in Detroit and Birmingham, Michigan. He earned a degree from the Wharton School
of Finance from the University of Pennsylvania, and later opened a photography shop in Ferndale Michigan where he displayed
his own photographs of travels to Europe. In 1975, Kriger relocated to San Francisco and opened a second shop, Jeff’s Photography
and Frame Shop, with clients including Bay Area artists, galleries, and museums.
As a photographer, much of Kriger’s work explores theatrical personalities within various social environments. Traveling to
places like Paris, Mardi Gras, and the Pacific Northwest, Kriger’s portrayals of parades, concerts, bars, and other spaces
capture the spirit of the era and the energy of his environment. His work ranges from formal compositions and abstract double-exposures
to casual snapshots.
Kriger’s talent and skill as a photographer resulted in numerous photo credits and exhibitions, including the N.O. Show, Impolite
Show, the Stud Bar, and the national exhibition of Disability and the Arts. In 1989 at the age of 42, Kriger passed away of
AIDS related complication.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Jeffrey S. Kriger photograph collection documents the photographic works of San Francisco-based photographer, entrepreneur,
and fine arts framer Jeffrey Kriger during the 1970s and early 1980s. Arranged into two series, photographic materials and
non-photographic materials, represented items include prints and negatives, photograph inventories, and an artist contract.
The first series, photographic materials, makes up the majority of the collection and is comprised of photographic prints,
negatives, slides, and contact sheets. This series includes images from Kriger’s photo project “What’s for Lunch?” and “Beyond
Mice”, as well as black and white abstract images, many of which were taken during Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Other subjects
documented in this series include San Francisco’s Stud Bar, Lesbian & Gay Freedom Day Parades, Harvey Milk, San Francisco
street scenes, apartment interiors, the Rolling Stones and Neil Young concerts, a hippie camp out, Europe, and other subjects.
The negatives and contact sheets exist in both 35mm and 6x7 formats (note: there are no contact print books #6, #10, #14,
or #16, and the first book is unnumbered). Many of the materials in this series include inventory numbers originally assigned
by Kriger.
Non-photographic materials, the second series, primarily document Kriger’s administrative activities as a San Francisco-based
photographer and owner of a fine art framing business. Materials include photograph information sheets which contain dates,
sale statistics, and titles of individual photographs taken by Kriger, as well as address books, inventory sheets, and a signed
contract for consignment of artwork. There is also one folder of memorial material collected after Kriger’s death in 1989.
